"THE CHENNAI'S BIG FAT WEDDING".... this was the headline in the news channels last week. the wedding of superstar Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya with Ashwin. this news coming as a headline is pretty normal our media (where they leave out other important national issues.) But the factor that induced me to write a blog about this was, The wedding was shown live in NDTV HINDU right from 7:30A.M till 10:00 P.M.
I am glad that they dint cover beyond "10:00" !!! Now dont you think this is important to discuss ?? two questions raised in my mind after watching this situation. first one is, is this intensive coverage required ? then is it good or bad ? i strongly have a belief in before we come to a conclusion,we have to analyse both the perspective, both positives and negatives. So i am going to just try to analyse both the media's perspective and the audiences view.
From an audiences point of view, yes. it was fun watching. even i enjoyed watching the reception. i was eagerly waiting to see my favorite actor who till the end dint turn up ? :( even my parents enjoyed it searching for the celebrities, whether he came, why dint that actor dint turn up, watching the customs and rituals performed in a typical Brahmin's style marriage and so on...
But when i thought, why i am watching this for such a long duration, eventhough its not the superstar's marriage himself, it was only his daughter's who is not very famous. then the answer to my question was i am watching this for long time because THEY ARE SHOWING ME FOR A LONG TIME ! ! The highlight was, there were many viewers who called in and appreciated NDTV for their remarkable effort on marriage video coverage.
So, now why are they showing for a long time. its veryy long from 7am to 10pm.. Presumably they would say that audiences wants this. They would show the evidence of the so called TRP ratings and blame on us the audience. Come on, even they need advertisements to earn money. and even advertisers cash in their moneys only to these kinda programes.
their view would be since we watch it, they are telecasting ?
our view would be since they telecast it, we watching ?
There are numerous debates going on for almost decades on this, the media persons blaming on audience and the audience blaming on media persons.
and i couldnt figure out the answer for this? should we restrict ourselves not to watch these and the media would stop by themself. or the media would stop telecasting these and we obviously have no other way to get exposed to these !
i dont know whether we can find a solution for this but hopefully this debate would also add on to the numerous debates thats already going on . . . .
Good take and spin!! You have the potential to be a media scholar, write on with similar third perspectives.best
